Lumentum Holdings is gaining recognition as a prominent stock in the AI infrastructure sector, distinct from semiconductor giants such as Nvidia and AMD. The company designs and manufactures high-speed optical networking components crucial for rapid data transfer in AI data centers.

A severe shortage of optical transceivers is driving market revenues to potentially increase more than tenfold within a few years. Consulting firm McKinsey projects that the supply of high-speed optical transceivers, including 1.6 terabit per second and 800-Gbps models, will fall significantly short of demand through 2027 and 2029. This imbalance has led to higher prices and improved margins for Lumentum.

Analysts expect Lumentum to report a 135% year-over-year revenue increase to approximately $1.25 billion and a 284% rise in adjusted earnings per share to $4.22 for the latest quarter, aligning with the company’s fiscal Q1 guidance. Goldman Sachs forecasts the optical networking market revenue rising from $15 billion in 2026 to $154 billion by 2028.

Lumentum plans to ramp up production of 1.6 terabit transceivers in 2027, which management anticipates will further enhance profit margins. With strong earnings growth potential, Lumentum’s stock has recently declined, presenting an attractive valuation at about 43 times forward earnings.

Investors seeking growth beyond traditional AI chipmakers may find Lumentum’s role in supporting AI data center infrastructure and its expected market expansion noteworthy.
